Assam Violence: PM assures help to CM Tarun Gogoi in curbing violence

To discuss the law and order situation in Assam, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has called up Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, to take all necessary measures to curb the violence and assist the state government in restoring normalcy.

Two people were killed in Kokrajhar on Nov 15, taking the toll to six since Nov 10. Kokrajhar and Chirang districts, which form Assam's BTAD (Bodoland Territorial Area Districts) along with Udalguri and Baksa, had witnessed one of the worst communal clashes earlier this year which led to the death of over 100 people and displacement of over four lakh people from their homes.

Gogoi gave a detailed report to Prime Minister regarding the situation, necessary steps taken to control the violence. Moreover, the prime minister also held discussions with the union home minister and asked him to extend all possible assistance to the Assam government in tackling the situation.

Meanwhile, Gogoi held discussions with 4 Corps General Officer Commanding Lt Gen C A Krishnan about the steps required to restore law and order. Earlier, the four BTAD districts and Dhubri were affected by violence between Bodos and minorities which left 90 people dead and more than 4.80 lakh homeless in July-August.
