Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar on Friday amid easing worries of fallout from the Omicron coronavirus variant. People are 50-70% less likely to be hospitalised with Omicron compared to previous strains of Covid-19, according to new evidence by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). However, weak domestic equities and sustained foreign fund outflows capped further gains in rupee. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained net sellers in the capital market on Thursday, as they offloaded shares worth Rs 271.59 crore, exchange data showed. On the global front, the US dollar was held steady as investors towards riskier assets as fears of the omicron variant’s virulence continue to fade, meanwhile ahead of the holidays and extended long weekend in the United States most major currency pairs are trading in narrow ranges.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 75.15, stronger by 11 paise from its previous close of 75.26 on Thursday. The currency touched a high and low of 75.2000 and 75.1100 respectively.
