Asian equity benchmarks traded mixed in early deals on Friday, in a thin holiday trade with lack of risk appetite in the market. US markets ended lower overnight with the persisting worries over rapid spread of Omicron cases world-wide. With early indications that the Omicron variant causes milder symptoms, traders seem optimistic the new strain will not derail the economic recovery. Trading activity is also somewhat subdued as some traders looked to get a head start on New Year's festivities. The Japanese stock market is closed for New Year's Day holiday on Friday. Markets in Indonesia, South Korea and Taiwan are also closed for holidays.
