Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra today released the party's first list of 125 candidates for Uttar Pradesh (UP) Assembly elections.
The party has given substantial representation to women in the upcoming elections. In the list of 125 candidates, 40 per cent are women and 40 per cent are youth. Priyanka Gandhi said that, ‘we have tried to include those who fight for the rights of the common man and with this historic initiative, we hope to bring in a new kind of politics in the country.’ She further said the party has fielded such candidates who have worked for the rights of common people, farmers and struggled for seeking justice in UP. The list including Asha Singh, mother of Unnao rape victim and from Shahjahanpur, fielded Asha worker, Poonam Pandey who led agitation for a raise in honorarium.
In the past few months, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra announced several women-centric promises including smartphones to Class 12 pass girls, electric scooters to graduating women etc. UP will go to the polls in seven phases from February 10 to March 7.
