Successful launch of India’s Agni 1 under practice trial of SFC personnel

The surface-to-surface missile, Agni 1 ballistic missile was successfully launched under a practice trial by the Strategic Force Command (SFC) of the Indian Army at about 8.30 am on 12 December 2012 from launch pad-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Wheeler Island, about 100 km from Balasore, defence .

The 15-metre-tall missile was picked up from the production lot for conducting the test-firing as part of regular exercise for the SFC personnel.  The entire operation was supervised by Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) missile technologists, a specialized navigation system ensured that it reaches the target with a high degree of accuracy and precision.

Agni-I has been developed by advanced systems laboratory, the premier missile development laboratory of the DRDO in collaboration with Defence Research Development Laboratory and Research Centre Imarat and integrated by Bharat Dynamics Limited, Hyderabad. The missile was developed following the Kargil conflict after the defence services perceived the need for such a version and it has already been inducted into the Army. The last trial of the Agni-I missile was successfully carried out by SFC personnel on July 13, 2012.
