In a massive gain from their 2017 result, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is leading in more than half the seats of the Punjab state Assembly and Bhagwant Mann is set to become the next chief minister (CM).

While addressing party workers and supporters, Bhagwant Mann said that he will take oath as CM in Bhagat Singh's ancestral village Khatkar Kalan, and not at Raj Bhawan. He said governance will be done from the villages of Punjab and not from the palatial houses of politicians. He added that ‘we have to run Punjab together, earlier Punjab used to be run from the big houses of leaders but not will be run from wards, villages and cities of Punjab.’

Bhagwant Mann won from Punjab’s Dhuri seat by a margin of over 45,000 votes against his nearest rival and Congress candidate Dalvir Singh Goldy. Punjab recorded an average voter turnout of 65.50 per cent on February 20 compared to over 77 per cent in 2017.
