Wheat acreage in Punjab set to cross 35-lakh-hectare target

In state of Punjab wheat sowing is expected to cross the set targeted area of 35 lakh hectares while the acreage in the state of Haryana may reach the targeted area of 25.05 lakh hectares during this rabi sowing season. As per the report compiled by the Punjab Agriculture department, with wheat sowing nearly complete in the northern region and based on information coming from fields, about 98% and 95% of targeted area have been covered with wheat in Punjab and Haryana, respectively.

So far in Punjab, 34.52 lakh hectares of area have been brought under wheat as compared to 35 lakh ha covered in corresponding period of last season. There were however few pockets in cotton belt in Bathinda and sub-mountain area in Hoshiarpur where wheat sowing is yet to complete which will be covered in few days. As against 35.28 lakh hectares of wheat acreage brought in last season this season the state has projected wheat acreage of 35 lakh hectares before commencement of sowing.

On the other hand, sowing of wheat in Haryana has been completed on 24 lakh hectares covering over 95% of targeted area this season. Compared to wheat acreage of 25.22 lakh hectares in last year this season the state has kept wheat acreage at 25.05 lakh hectares.

For rabi sowing season 2012-13 the wheat growing states of Punjab and Haryana are eyeing wheat output of 285 lakh tone. This is however 8% lower than the all time high crop production witnessed last season. Further, due to late harvesting of paddy crop the wheat sowing in the states got delayed by about week.

Punjab is eyeing wheat output of 161 lakh tonne with yield of 46.96 quintals a hectare while Haryana is aiming at a production of 124 lakh tonne with 49.50 quintals per hectare yield for 2012-13 season.
