Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Bhagwant Mann today moved a resolution against the Centre’s Agnipath defence recruitment scheme in the state assembly in Chandigarh. The resolution was moved in the House during the budget session.
According to the resolution, the House recommends to the state government to take up the matter with the Union government to immediately roll back the Agnipath scheme. While moving the resolution against the scheme, CM said that the unilateral announcement of the Agnipath scheme by the Government of India has witnessed widespread reactions in all states, including Punjab. He further added that this policy is likely to create dissatisfaction among the youth who wish to serve the armed forces of the nation for a lifetime. Calling the scheme anti-youth, Mann said he will raise the issue of scheme with the PM and the Union Home Minister.
Meanwhile, BJP legislators Ashwani Sharma and Jangi Lal Mahajan opposed the resolution. Punjab is the only state to have passed a resolution against the scheme in its state assembly.
