The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) today announced its support BJP’s candidate Draupadi Murmu instead of oppositions joint candidate Yashwant Sinha. The party chief N Chandrababu Naidu announced this at a meeting of the party's strategy committee.

Naidu cited that the social background of Draupadi being the prime reason for the support. ‘Draupadi hails from a tribal community and it would be an honour for a woman from such a weaker community to be the President of India,’ he said. He further said the party always stood for social justice. It had in the past supported K R Narayanan and A P J Abdul Kalam for the President's post.

Earlier, the ruling YSRC Party had extended its support to Murmu. The Presidential elections will take place on July 18. The counting will take place on July 21st and the same day results will be declared.
