Rupee weakens against US dollar on Wednesday

Indian rupee weakened against the US dollar on Wednesday as concerns about swelling trade deficit weighed on investors' sentiments. Rupee sentiments also pressured by global central bank efforts to tame inflation. Although, weakness in the US dollar index and suspected RBI intervention helped the rupee come off Tuesday's record low of 80.06. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained net buyers in the capital market as they purchased shares worth Rs 976.40 crore on Tuesday, exchange data showed.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 79.97, weaker by 5 paise from its previous close of 79.92 on Tuesday. The currency touched a high and low of 79.9875 and 79.89 respectively.
