18 Jan 2013 Evaluate

Praising government’s move to allow oil marketing companies to hike diesel rates, industry body ASSOCHAM said, oil companies should increase diesel prices in phases and pass on the burden in phases otherwise the inflation will escalate and may become unacceptable to the masses.

The government in a bold reforms decision, allowed the oil companies to increase the diesel prices by a ‘small quantum’ periodically. The cabinet also approved the decision to raise cap on subsidized LPG cylinders from six to nine, effective from April, 2013. By adding further, ASSOCHAM said, the government should format a seven-year time bound programme to phase out all avoidable subsidies and make the plan transparent.

Moreover, in all probability, the diesel prices may be hiked by Rs 1.50-2.0 per litre in the first instance that will be effective from the midnight Jan 17 as per the decision taken by the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA) headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Price of diesel was last revised on September 14 when it was hiked by a steep Rs 5.63 per litre.
