Commodity bourses turnover slips 5.54% during April-December period

The country has more than 20 commodity exchanges at both national level and regional level. During the financial year 2012-13, from April 1, 2012 up to December 31, 2012, the turnover of commodity exchanges fell by 5.54% and stood at Rs 12,962,447 crore due to decline in bullion trade. The turnover of commodity bourses was Rs 13,722,854 crore in the corresponding period of previous fiscal.

In the first nine months of 2012-13, bullion trade declined by 25.30% and stood at Rs 6,003,141 crore compared to Rs 8,036,753 crore in the year-ago period. On the other hand, the total trade in agriculture commodities during the period rose 16.39% to Rs 1,712,849 crore, from Rs 1,471,629 crore in the nine months of the previous fiscal.

Similarly, trade in metals other than bullion increased by 17.44% from April-December at Rs 2,399,548 crore, from Rs 2,043,105 crore in the year-ago period. The trade in energy was up by Rs 2,846,907 crore compared with Rs 2,171,364 crore during the period under review.
