Indian rupee weakened against the US dollar on Friday, tracking the strength of the American currency in the overseas market as the Federal Reserve policymakers continued to talk up the need for further interest-rate increases ahead of Jackson Hole symposium next week. Further, weakness in equity markets, strong importers demand for dollars and speculative buying of dollars also weighed on the domestic currency. Meanwhile, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net sellers in the capital market as they offloaded shares worth Rs 1,706.00 crore on Thursday, exchange data showed.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 79.75, weaker by 11 paise from its previous close of 79.64 on Thursday. The currency touched a high and low of 79.7750 and 79.7300 respectively.
