For 2012-13 crop year which begins from October to September period, the country’s cotton production is estimated to be around 325 lakh bales which includes loose cotton as well, with the state of Gujarat topping the list at 85 lakh bales, as per the reports compiled by Indian Cotton Federation (ICF). The cotton production in Gujarat was estimated after considering the effects of drought conditions over there.
Similarly, Gujarat was followed by Maharashtra with production estimates at around 80 lakh bales (a bale is 170 kgs), Andhra Pradesh accounting for 68 lakh bales and Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan accounting for 57 lakh bales.
Besides, the crop forecast for state of Madhya Pradesh stood at 16 lakh bales, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Orissa and other states may account for 11, five, two and one lakh bales respectively.
