Bharti Airtel soars on increasing call tariff rates by nearly 100%

Bharti Airtel is currently trading at Rs. 366.50, up by 14.85 points or 4.22% from its previous closing of Rs. 351.65 on the BSE.

The scrip opened at Rs. 350.60 and has touched a high and low of Rs. 367.80 and Rs. 350.25 respectively. So far 567306 shares were traded on the counter.

The BSE group 'A' stock of face value Rs. 5 has touched a 52 week high of Rs. 400.90 on 03-Feb-2012 and a 52 week low of Rs. 238.50 on 30-Aug-2012.

Last one week high and low of the scrip stood at Rs. 367.80 and Rs. 335.00 respectively. The current market cap of the company is Rs. 139084.54 crore.

The promoters holding in the company stood at 68.50% while Institutions and Non-Institutions held 25.46% and 6.04% respectively.

In a blow to customers, Bharti Airtel has increased their call tariff rates by nearly 100%. The company has doubled the call rates from Re 1 per minute to Rs 2 per minute. The substantial increase in rates hints of pricing power returning to the telecom sector, with incumbents likely to have more flexibility going forward.

As per the company, the hike was inevitable and revision in rates is in line with increasing costs. Further towards this development, the plan to hike tariff rates have already been submitted with the telecom regulator TRAI.

Earlier this month, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone hiked tariffs for 2G data services. Airtel revised its 1GB 2G data plan from Rs 100 to Rs 125.
