Senior Congress leader and Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today resigned from all positions including primary membership of Congress. Azad's resignation comes days after he refused to take up the chairmanship of Jammu and Kashmir Campaign Committee.

In a five page letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Azad said ‘I have decided to sever my half a century old association with the Indian National Congress and herby resign from all my positions including the primary membership of the Indian National Congress,’. He also said that proxies are being propped up to take over leadership and organisational elections are a sham. All senior and experienced leaders were sidelined and new coterie of inexperienced sycophants started running the affairs of the party. Azad's letter was a scathing attack on both Sonia and Rahul. Despite serving eight terms in the Rajya Sabha, Azad, who retired from the Upper House in March, was not renominated to the Upper House by the Congress.
