Cotton production revised downward to 330 lakh bales

The cotton production has been revised lower to 330 lakh bales (lb) as compared to 355 lb achieved last year, a decline by 7.04%. The Cotton Advisory Board (CAB), in its meeting held on October 04, 2012 has projected cotton production during 2012-13 cotton season at 334 lb of 170 kgs each.

Against earlier estimation of 116.14 lakh hectares, the area under cotton crop is expected to increase marginally to 117.73 lakh hectares, with a lower area reported in Punjab and Karnataka.

For arriving at crop estimate the CAB has introduced a two-tier meeting which involves consultative meet with the industry members for collecting the input. Then an 18-member team of Government officials will meet separately to arrive at the estimates.
