The export of onions has been better compared to last year but the velocity of export has fallen, as per the report compiled by the government body National Horticultural Research and Development Foundation (NHRDF). During the April-December period of the current fiscal, the exports of onion stood at 12.95 lakh tonnes, a jump of 17.72% compared to 11 lakh tonne of onions exported in the same period last year.
The fall in exports can be attributed to the rising price of the crop in the domestic market making it less competitive compared to the international market. The shipments during January and February month are seen lower as the domestic price of the crop rose by Rs 2-3 per kg to Rs 14-15 per kg in growing regions in anticipation of a drop in the output this year, thereby reducing export margins. Maximum of onions are exported to Gulf nations and South- East Asia countries especially Indonesia and Malaysia.
NHRDF expects that despite 10% decline in acreage, the total onion production in the 2012-13 crop year (July-June) period will remain same as last year’s level of 174 lakh tonnes. Also, the productivity of onion this year is expected to be higher and there will be no supply shortages. Besides, the quantity of onion coming into the mandis so far this year is almost equal to that of last year’s level. The wholesale rates are expected to cool down in the coming days as supply is sufficient to meet demand.
