Rabi Crops sown in 605.02 lakh hectare so far

The sowing of Rabi crops is in full swing and is progressing well in different parts of the country. The sowing has picked up significantly in the last one week and is likely to remain brisk as the weather is generally favorable. The sowing area is however less compared to the area sown by this time previous year, as per the reports received from different states to the Ministry of Agriculture. The Rabi crop is been sown around 605.02 lakh hectare for 2012-13 marketing season compared to 608.34 lakh hectare sown for 2011-12 marketing season.

For 2012-13 marketing season, wheat has been sown in 297.61 lakh hectare which is less compared to 298.59 lakh hectare sown in 2011-12 marketing season. Rice has been sown in 14.76 lakh hectare compared to 20.42 lakh hectare sown in the corresponding period of the last year.

Similarly, Sorghum has been sown in 38.81 lakh hectare compared to 37.65 lakh hectare. Coarse Cereals has been sown in 61.93 lakh hectare compared to 58.86 lakh hectare while Pulses has been sown in 144.49 lakh hectare compared to 145.86 lakh hectare.

Separately, Oilseeds have been sown in 86.23 lakh hectare in 2012-13 marketing season compared to 84.62 lakh hectare in 2011-12 marketing season while Rapeseed & Mustard and Gram have been sown in 67.17 lakh hectare and 93.20 lakh hectare respectively.
