Indian rupee weakened against the US dollar on Friday tracking weak domestic equities in line with weak global cues. Meanwhile, senior Fed officials said the US central bank’s benchmark interest rate may need to rise higher than earlier anticipated to subdue inflation. However, foreign fund inflows and a weak American currency in overseas markets supported the local domestic unit and capped further fall in rupee. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) were net buyers in capital markets as they bought shares worth Rs 618.37 crore on Thursday, exchange data showed.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 81.71, weaker by 7 paise from its previous close of 81.64 on Thursday. The currency touched a high and low of 81.7350 and 81.52 respectively.
