Hearing on a plea filed by Amicus Curiae Harish Salve, Supreme Court has asked the Delhi Police to withdraw its personnel from VIP security duties and deploy them for safety of women in the city. Court has given the time to file affidavit on deployment of policemen for VVIP security till February 11. In case states failed to do so by Feb 11, their home secretaries will have to appear personally in court on February 16.

According to Harish Salve thousands of crores of rupees were being spent on VIP security, which can rather be used for ensuring the safety on women in the city. The direction came after the Delhi Police said in the Supreme Court that it deploys thousands of personnel for security of judges and others. Hearing the Delhi Police's arguments, the apex court said that many of these personnel could be deployed for better purposes like making the Delhi roads safe for women.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had sought response from the States and Union territories on framing of guidelines for security to VIPs following allegations that those who do not deserve cover were enjoying it.The landmark order from the apex court comes in the wake of the December 16 gangrape and murder of a 23-year-old paramedical student in Delhi.
