The Minimum Support Price (MSP) for 2013 season has been fixed by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) for both the varieties of Copra. CCEA has approved the MSP for fair average quality (FAQ) of Milling Copra at Rs 5,250 per quintal and of Ball Copra at Rs 5,500 per quintal.
This represents an increase of Rs 150 per quintal for both Milling and Ball Copra over the MSP announced by the government last season. This step taken by CCEA is expected to encourage farmers to step up investment in coconut cultivation and thereby production and productivity of coconut in the country.
Further, to undertake price support operation at the minimum support prices in the coconut growing states, the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) would continue to act as the nodal agency.
On the other hand, the hike is lower than that sought by the Agriculture Ministry. The Agriculture Ministry had proposed a hike of Rs 250 per quintal in the MSP of ball copra, and Rs 200 per quintal in milling copra.
