Seventeen former leaders of the Democratic Azad Party (DAP), who had quit the party following the resignation of Ghulam Nabi Azad have rejoined ahead of Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Yatra entering the state.

Prominent leaders, including former J-K Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, former minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed, Muzaffar Parray and Balwan Singh returned to the Congress fold today. Asked about the reasons to quit the Congress, Tara Chand said they quit Congress because they got carried away by emotions and friendship and quit the party in haste. Peerzada said there is a need to strengthen and unite all secular force in Jammu and Kashmir. Azad had expelled a few of them from his party last month for anti-party activities.

AICC general secretary K C Venugopal welcomed the leaders, saying it was a happy occasion for the party as they were returning back to their home. He said this is only a beginning and when the Yatra is entering Jammu and Kashmir, all people with Congress ideology and who want a united India will join the party. Party leader Jairam Ramesh said ‘A total of 19 leaders were to join today, but 17 were able to come to Delhi and join today. This is the first phase and others will also join soon’.
