Rupee weakens against US dollar on Friday

Indian rupee weakened against the US dollar in early trade on Friday, tracking weakness in domestic equities and sustained foreign fund outflows from the capital market. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) turned net sellers in the capital markets on Thursday as they offloaded shares worth Rs 1,662.63 crore, exchange data showed. Firm crude oil prices and retreat in US inflation rate in December also dented rupee sentiments. Although on the domestic macroeconomic front, India’s industrial production growth rose to a five-month high of 7.1% in November and Retail inflation declined to a one-year low of 5.72% in December.

The partially convertible currency is currently trading at 81.42, weaker by 12 paise from its previous close of 81.30 on Thursday. The currency touched a high and low of 81.4550 and 81.3250 respectively.
