During ongoing Kharif Marketing Season (KMS) 2012-13, the government agencies have procured 26,262,355 tonne of rice, as per data made available to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. The total amount of rice procured till February 21, 2013 during current KMS, is more than the rice procured during the corresponding period of previous season which stood at 25,189,286 tonnes.
The highest procurement of rice has been done in the state of Punjab amounting 8,556,984 tonne which is followed by the state of Chhattisgarh which procured 4,721,006 and Andhra Pradesh state which procured 3,383,989 tonne of rice.
Besides, the state of Haryana and Odisha also made significant procurement of around 2,595,378 and 2,239,193 tonne of rice respectively.
