Karnataka Assembly election process formally kicks off

The poll process of Karnataka Assembly elections formally began today with the issuance of gazette notification paving the way for candidates to file their nomination papers.

According to the Election Commission’s (EC's), the last date of filing the nominations is April 20 and the papers will be scrutinised on April 21. The last date of withdrawal of candidature is April 24. Of the total 224 constituencies in the state, where 36 seats have been reserved for Scheduled Castes and 15 for Scheduled Tribes. It is the seventh largest legislative assembly by strength. The state will go for polls in a single-phase on May 10 and the state election results will be declared on May 13.

Meanwhile, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) announced its first list and second list of candidates for upcoming assembly elections on Tuesday. While BJP has fielded Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai from his traditional Shiggaon seat, former CM BS Yediyurappa’s son BY Vijayendra will be contesting from his father’s Shikaripura constituency. The Karnataka elections are expected to be a close contest between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress, with the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S).
