Karnataka elections 2023: Former deputy CM Laxman Savadi denied ticket by BJP, to join Congress

Former Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi is set to join the Congress today, just two days after resigning from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after being denied a ticket in the upcoming Karnataka Assembly election due in May 2023.

Savadi, who announced his decision to resign from the primary membership of the BJP after being denied a ticket to contest in the Assembly elections. Earlier in the day, Former deputy CM met state Congress president DK Shivakumar and LoP Siddaramaiah at the latter’s residence in Bengaluru and held discussions regarding this. KPCC chief D K Shivakumar today confirmed the Savadi’s entry into the party. Savadi was eyeing the Athani assembly constituency seat, but the BJP chose to field sitting MLA Mahesh Kumathalli instead.

Laxman Savadi had resigned from the BJP on Wednesday and said ‘I have made my decision. I am not the one who goes around with a begging bowl. I am a self-respecting politician. I am not acting under the influence of anyone’. Apart from Savadi, six-time MLA S Angara from Sullia constituency, BJP MLC R Shankar, Mudigere BJP MLA M P Kumaraswamy and MLA Goolihatti Shekhar are some of the leaders who have quit the party on being denied tickets. The BJP this week released two lists of 189 and 23 candidates for the 224-seat. The assembly poll in the state will be held on May 10 and the results will be declared on May 13.
