The Congress today said it will continue to avail all options still available under the law after the dismissal of the application of Rahul Gandhi in the 2019 criminal defamation case by the Surat Court. ‘We will continue to avail all options still available to us under the law. Dr A M Singhvi will brief the media on Rahul Gandhi*s appeal at 4 pm,’ Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said.

A Surat court today dismissed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s application to stay the conviction in the criminal defamation case regarding the ‘Modi surname’ remark he had made while addressing a campaign event ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Additional Sessions Judge Robin P Mogera rejected Gandhi*s application for a relief pending his appeal against a lower court*s order sentencing him to two years in jail in the case. The congress Gujarat unit said it will explore the possibility of approaching the High Court and the Supreme Court.

Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad after a lower court in Surat sentenced him to two years in jail on March 23 under sections 499 and 500 (defamation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in a case filed by former Gujarat minister and BJP MLA from Surat West Purnesh Modi.
