Veteran politician and National Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar today stepped down from his position as the party chief.

Sharad Pawar announced his decision while speaking at a book launch of his autobiography at the Yashwantrao Chavan Pratisthan. His surprise announcement was met with protests by party workers who demanded him to withdraw his decision. He has also clarified that he would not retire from active politics. Pawar said it was time for a new generation to guide the party and the direction it intends to take. He has not mentioned the name of his successor, but he formed a committee of senior party leaders to draw up a future course of action. The committee, including former Union minister Praful Patel, former Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, and Member of Parliament Supriya Sule. Top NCP leader and Rajya Sabha Praful Patel said Sharad Pawar did not take anyone into confidence before announcing his resignation.

Pawar, who served as Union Defence and Agriculture minister, is one of the country's top Opposition leaders and had a big role in stitching together a then unlikely alliance between Shiv Sena, Congress, and NCP to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra.
