Asian markets settle mostly higher on Friday

19 May 2023 Evaluate
Asian markets settled mostly higher on Friday, tracking Wall Street gains overnight with signs that President Biden’s administration is making progress on debt-ceiling talks with Congress. Meanwhile, investors are awaiting US Fed Chair Jerome Powell's speech later in the day to gauge the monetary policy path. Japanese stocks gained on the back of strong domestic earnings, but Japanese currency yen rose slightly against the dollar after Japan’s inflation re-accelerated in April. However, Chinese shares declined on worries about China's uneven economic recovery.
