Asian markets settle mostly higher on Monday

22 May 2023 Evaluate
Asian markets settled mostly higher on Monday with expectations for a US debt ceiling deal. US lawmakers would continue negotiations today to increase US debt limit. Meanwhile, US Federal Chair Powell said the Federal Reserve might not have to raise interest rates as high as earlier expected to control inflation. Japanese shares gained as the yen weakened after dovish comments by BOJ Governor Kazuo, despite data showed Japan's core machinery orders fell in March for a second straight month. Moreover, Chinese shares rose after US president Joe Biden said he expected ties with China to improve very shortly.
