Delhi High Court provides interim relief to Bharti Airtel

20 Mar 2013 Evaluate

Providing interim relief to Bharti Airtel, Delhi High Court has put stay on the order which requires the telecom player to immediately stop 3G services in select regions. With this development, Bharti can continue with 3G intra- circle roaming facilities till the High Court’s next hearing, which is scheduled to be held on May 8, 2013.

This move comes right after Department of Telecom (DOT) directed the company to stop intra-circle 3G roaming in seven circles, where the company does not have the spectrum and also levied a penalty of Rs 350 crore (Rs 50 crore per circle) for violating the licence terms and conditions. The affected circles include Haryana, Kolkata, Uttar Pradesh East, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Kerala and Madhya Pradesh. However, Bharti filed a plea against Department of Telecom’s (DOT) order to stop offering 3G roaming with the Delhi High Court, which temporarily has been accepted.

Bharti Airtel is a leading integrated telecommunications company with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa. The company ranks amongst the top 5 mobile service providers globally in terms of subscribers.
