Asian markets settle mostly lower on Monday

17 Jul 2023 Evaluate
Asian markets settled mostly lower on Monday tracking last Friday’s mixed finish on Wall Street shares, despite expectations for an imminent end to US interest rate hikes. Meanwhile, Hong Kong markets were remained shut due to a warning issued for Typhoon Talim, and Japanese markets were closed for Marine Day. China's Shanghai Composite index declined as weak Chinese GDP data fuelled concerns about recovery in the world's second-largest economy. Data showed China's 6.3% GDP growth for the second quarter marked a 0.8% pace of growth from the first quarter, slower than the 2.2% quarter-on-quarter pace recorded in the first three months of 2023.
