Oil Minister Dr. M. Veerappa Moily has said that the government is working towards securing energy independence for India. While, addressing an event, he said that the oil ministry has formulated new vision and set ambitious targets to reduce India’s energy dependence on crude oil imports achieving self-sufficiency by 2030. For implementing the new exploration programmes across the country, a committee headed by the former Finance secretary Vijay Kelkar has been set up to find ways to boost the domestic production of oil and gas and help India to achieve energy security by 2030.
Another committee, the Cabinet Committee on Investments (CCI) has been set-up to fast-track large-delayed projects and has already given clearance for 5 out of 7 exploration blocks in the No Go area. Dr. Moily pointed out, that only 73 billon barrels out of 205 billon barrels of prognosticated hydrocarbon resources have been established, which leaves 133 billion barrels still to be unlocked. By adding further, the oil minister has said that the domestic crude oil production is estimated to reach 42.31 MMT during 2012-13, which would be 11.08 percent higher than previous year. The increase in production is mainly on account of higher crude oil production from Barmer fields in Rajasthan where current oil production is 1,70,00 bbl/day.
To create enabling and conducive environment to promote investments in this sector, the government is working to make fiscal terms that are simple to administer and considering the recommendations of a committee setup by the Prime Minister under the Chairmanship of Dr. C. Rangarajan.
