Asian markets settle mostly lower on Tuesday

18 Jul 2023 Evaluate
Asian markets settled mostly lower on Tuesday. Chinese and Hong Kong shares declined as weaker-than-expected Chinese gross domestic product data fuelled concerns about recovery in the world's second-largest economy. Data showed that China's 6.3% GDP growth for the second quarter marked a 0.8% pace of growth from the first quarter, slower than the 2.2% quarter-on-quarter pace recorded in the first three months of 2023. However, Japanese shares rose by tracking Wall Street’s overnight rally with hopes that the US Federal Reserve is nearing the end of its tightening cycle.
