PM likely to meet ministers today evening in 2G Scam context

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, to resolve the crisis arising out of the controversial finance ministry note on 2G spectrum, is likely to hold a meeting today evening.

As Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) and Bhartiya Janta Party has asked the Finance Secretary to be summoned to clarify the finance ministry’s note on 2G spectrum. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee wrote to Prime Minister Singh clarifying the note had been prepared in consultation with other ministries along with a copy to Congress president Sonia Gandhi. This has coerced Singh to hold meeting.Singh may hold meeting post his Sikkim visit.

The finance ministry’s note dated March 25 states then Finance Minister Chidambaram could have prevented spectrum from being given away at throwaway prices by insisting on its auction.

The 2G spectrum licenses were announced in 2007 at throwaway prices. According to the estimate of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India, the presumptive loss from the 2G scam was Rs 1.76 lakh crore. A Raja, his personal secretary, Kanimozhi and others are already arrested and lodged in Tihar Jail. P Chidambaram’s name is the latest addition to this list and his role is yet to be probed by the investigating agency CBI.
