Asian markets settle mostly lower on Wednesday

16 Aug 2023 Evaluate
Asian markets settled mostly down on Wednesday, tracking Wall Street’s fall overnight after stronger-than-expected US retail sales data stoked worries that interest rates could stay higher for longer. Japanese shares dropped amid rising uncertainties globally. Chinese shares declined sharply after data showed that China's house prices continued to decline in July, in a further sign of the property slowdown, while absence of meaningful stimulus measures from Beijing also weighed on investor sentiments. Meanwhile, a possible downgrade of several US lenders by Fitch Ratings also dented market sentiments.
