An all-time low output from KG-D6 propels RIL to stop gas supplies to power plant

10 Apr 2013 Evaluate

Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Industries (RIL) has stopped gas supplies to power plants after its KG-D6 output hit an all-time low. The company supplied a little less than 1mmcmd of gas to power plants in February.

KG-D6 output last month dropped to 16.46 million standard cubic meters per day, not even sufficient enough to fulfill requirement of urea-manufacturing fertiliser plants and LPG plants, which are placed at the top of the supply priority list. The lack of gas from RIL has propelled nearly 13 plants with aggregate electricity generation capacity of 5200 MW to face closure.

In response to this, Power Ministry has urged that the sector should be allotted the same status as fertiliser and whatever supplies of gas is available from KG-D6 should be distributed among the two on pro-rata basis.
