23 Aug 2023 Evaluate
Asian markets ended mostly higher on Wednesday, even with caution ahead of US Fed Chair Jerome Powell's highly anticipated speech at Jackson Hole Symposium this week for clues about the future path of interest rates. Japanese shares gained after a survey showed factory activity in Japan shrank at a slower pace in August. The au Jibun Bank flash Japan Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) edged up to a seasonally adjusted 49.7 in August from 49.6 in July. However, Chinese shares declined on sell-off by foreign investors followed with rising fears over contagion in the property sector.
