In the upcoming five-day special session in Parliament commencing from September 18, there is a strong possibility that Prime Minister (PM) of India Narendra Modi will propose a resolution to officially change the name of India to ‘Bharat.’ This comes after G20 Summit 2023 invites, from the President Draupadi Murmu's office, which written ‘The President of Bharat’ instead of ‘President of India’ came out in the public domain.
The G20 Summit 2023 invites triggered a Congress versus BJP debate. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh slammed the Modi government and called the move as an assault on the Constitution. He said that PM Modi ‘can continue to distort history and divider India, that is Bharat, that is a Union of States’ while adding that the opposition will not be deterred. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said that he hopes the government ‘will not be so foolish as to completely dispense with India’ while there is no constitutional objection to calling India as Bharat. He added that India has ‘incalculable brand value built up over centuries.’ Reacting to Congress’ remarks BJP national president JP Nadda questioned the party’s objections to every work done for the 'honour and glory' of the country. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that the saffron party decided to change the name of India to Bharat because it is thinking that its vote count will decrease. Kejriwal asked ‘If INDIA alliance changes its name to Bharat, will they rename Bharat?’.
While, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat has supported for this change. He had previously urged people to use the term ‘Bharat’ instead of ‘India', emphasising that the country has been known as Bharat for centuries. BJP MP Harnath Singh Yadav has demanded that the country's name should be changed from India to Bharat. He said that the word 'India' was used by the Britishers as a curse.
