Asian markets settle mostly down on Wednesday

20 Sep 2023 Evaluate
Asian markets settled mostly down on Wednesday with caution ahead of a raft of key central bank policy decisions, including from the Bank of Japan and the US Federal Reserve. Japanese shares fell and the yen rose from its near 10-month low after US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said any intervention by Japan to prop up the yen would be understandable if it were aimed to smooth out volatility. Moreover, Chinese shares declined on lingering growth concerns in the world's second-largest economy, while foreign investor selling also weighed on market sentiments. But in line with market expectations, the People's Bank of China kept its benchmark lending rates unchanged.
