In a historic move, the Vice-President and the Rajya Sabha (RS) Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar today reconstituted the panel of vice-chairpersons consisting of 13 women RS members for the day as the house took up the Women's Reservation Bill for discussion.
The women Members nominated to the Panel of Vice-Chairpersons are P T Usha, SPhangnon Konyak, Jaya Bachchan, Saroj Pandey, Rajani Ashokrao Patil, Fauzia Khan, Dola Sen, Indu Bala Goswami, Kanimozhi NVN Somu, Kavita Patidar, Mahua Maji, Kalpana Saini and Sulata Deo. Jagdeep Dhankhar emphasized that their presence on the chair would send a powerful message to the world at large and it would symbolize that they held a ‘commanding position’ during this epochal moment of change.
The Constitution (128th Amendment) Bill granting reservation to women on one-third seats in Lok Sabha and state assemblies was passed in the Lower House of Parliament on Wednesday with near unanimity: 454 votes in favour and two from the AIMIM against it. This law will be implemented after it is passed by both the houses of the Parliament, but to become effective, it will have to wait till the census and then delimitation. PM Narendra Modi today expressed his gratitude to the MPs across party lines over the passage of the Bill in the Lower House.
