Asian markets settled mostly higher on Friday as investors awaiting US nonfarm payrolls data due later in the day for clues on interest rate outlook. Hong Kong shares led gains ahead of the reopening of Chinese markets next week after the Golden week holiday. However, Japanese shares dropped by growing expectations of interest-rate hikes by the US Federal Reserve after data showed US job openings unexpectedly rose by the most in over two years to 9.610 million in August. Japan's household spending in August declined 2.5% from a year earlier, declining for the sixth consecutive months.
