Government urges jute millers to stop raw jute imports amid excess supply

12 Oct 2023 Evaluate

Owing to excess supply of raw jute in domestic market, the government has urged jute mills to stop importing raw jute. It has also directed jute millers to submit daily transaction reports in a prescribed format until December. Every Jute Mill must mandatorily send the details of import of Raw Jute and/or Jute goods such as type (HSN code wise and grade-wise in case of Raw Jute), quantity, price, source of import (including country), etc and details of usage of imported Raw Jute and/or Jute Goods.

Jute mills are advised to refrain from import of raw jute of TD 4 to TD 8 variants (as per the old classification used in the trade) as theses variants are in adequate supply in the country. The variants make up 75 per cent of the total jute production and trade.

In current season, jute production stood at 91 lakh bales with an opening stock of 23 lakh bales and 5 lakh bales of imported raw jute, resulting in a total estimated availability of 119 lakh bales. In 2021-22, jute imports amounted to 62,500 tonnes valued at Rs 449 crore, while exports reached 32,000 tonnes, valued at Rs 222 crore. To protect the interests of farmers, the center recently banned raw jute transactions below the Minimum Support Price (MSP) level. West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Andhra Pradesh are major producers of jute, with lakhs of farmers engaged in its cultivation.
