Government gives green signal to export over 10 lakh tonnes non-basmati white rice to specific countries

The government of India have given a green signal to export 10,34,800 tonnes of non-basmati white rice to specific countries. The countries eligible for these rice exports include Nepal, Cameroon, Cote D' Ivore, Guinea, Malaysia, Philippine and Seychelles. The export is permitted through National Cooperative Exports. The quantity allowed to export non-basmati white rice for Nepal is 95,000 tonnes, Cameroon (1,90,000 tonnes), Cote D' Ivore (1,42,000 tonnes), Guinea (1,42,000 tonnes), Malaysia (1,70,000 tonnes), Philippines (2,95,000 tonnes), and Seychelles (800 tonnes). The said permission granted by the government to certain countries to meet their food security needs and on request.

In July 2023, the government had banned exports of non-basmati white rice to boost domestic supply and keep retail prices under check during the upcoming festive season. Following the ban on non-basmati white rice, India introduced a 20% tax on parboiled rice shipments and established a minimum price for basmati rice exports in an effort to manage local prices. 

As per the commerce ministry data, India's total exports of basmati rice stood at $4.8 billion in 2022-23, while in volume terms it was at 45.6 lakh tonnes. Similarly, exports of non-basmati stood at $6.36 billion in the last fiscal. In volume terms it was 177.9 lakh tonnes. Major destinations of India's non-basmati white rice exports include Thailand, Italy, Spain, Sri Lanka and the USA.
