Asian markets settle mostly down on Thursday

19 Oct 2023 Evaluate
Asian markets settled mostly down on Thursday tracking Wall Street’s overnight fall on rising Middle East tensions, while hawkish Federal Reserve bets and higher bond yields have also dented market sentiments. Japanese shares declined, while Japanese yen rose slightly against US dollar as data showed Japan's exports rose 4.3 percent in September and the trade balance swung to a surplus of 62.4 trillion yen ($410 billion). Seoul shares dropped following Washington's updated exports control on chip exports to China. But South Korea's central bank left its key interest rate unchanged at 3.50 percent. Moreover, Chinese markets fell after troubled property developer Country Garden missed a $15 million coupon repayment without explanation.
