Procurement of wheat in Punjab, Haryana surpasses 25 LT

The procurement of wheat in state of Haryana and Punjab have surpassed the 25 lakh-tonne (LT) mark with stocks arriving in grain markets after the harvest festival of Baisakhi April 13. The agriculture department in both states expects a bumper crop this year and Punjab has set a record procurement target of 140 LT while Haryana has set a record procurement target of 90 LT.

In the current procurement season over 18.65 LT of wheat has arrived in Haryana with Karnal, Kaithal and Kurukshetra leading in procurement among all districts in the state. In Punjab, over 7.23 LT of wheat had arrived till Tuesday evening with Patiala, Sangrur and Ludhiana districts leading in procurement in the state.

The Punjab government has set aside Rs 18,998 crore for wheat procurement this season as it is targeting a record procurement of over 140 LT this season. The Punjab government has set up over 1,750 procurement centres and the minimum support price (MSP) for wheat has been fixed at Rs 1,350 per quintal this time.

Despite having just 1.54% of the country’s geographical area the state of Punjab is the biggest contributor (over 60%) of food grain to the national kitty. It had procured a record 129.35 LT of wheat in 2012.
