Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar today blamed the Congress' preoccupation with assembly polls in five states for the INDIA coalition's inability to build on the momentum it had gained in recent months.

Nitish Kumar’s remarks to the effect came at a rally organised by the Communist Party of India (CPI) in Patna. The rally, named 'Bhaajpa hataao Desh bachao' (dislodge the BJP from power, save the country), was attended by senior leaders including CPI general secretary D Raja. He said that the Congress was ‘busy with the five-state elections’ and therefore the INDIA bloc had been put on the backburner for now. He further said that congress had been assigned a leading role in the INDIA coalition, but it appears they will respond and call the next meeting only after the ongoing elections.

Bihar CM also criticized the BJP for attempting to pit Hindus against Muslims while noting with satisfaction that Bihar has remained relatively free from communal disturbances. He accused the ruling BJP at the Centre for ‘trying to alter the country's history, to hide the fact that it had played no role in the struggle for independence’. During his speech, Kumar recalled his close association with the Left parties particularly CPI and CPI(M), since the 1980s. He also said that all Left parties, which share a common origin, should consider reuniting. Nitish Kumar hosted the first meeting of opposition leaders in June which set the tone for the formation of the new coalition.
