Bihar has set a target of 100 lakh tonnes (LT) of paddy production this year by using the System of Root Intensification (SRI) method of cultivation. The government has set this target after it attained the record production of 87 LT in 2012-13 using SRI method of paddy cultivation. The production of rice in Bihar was 36.4 LT in 2009-10, which increased to 81.87 LT in 2011-12 and 87 LT in 2012-13 due to use of SRI method.

In order to achieve the above target the government has planned to bring 25 lakh acres of area under paddy cultivation through SRI method in the kharif season. Since SRI method of paddy cultivation requires less water and gives 2-3 times the yield compared to traditional cultivation of rice it has been successful so far in different parts of Bihar.

Bihar introduced the SRI method of cultivation four years ago. Despite the state government providing free seeds, fertilizers and experts to guide them the farmers were initially reluctant to adopt this new technique but now more farmers are taking to this method of paddy cultivation. The farmers have achieved up to 40% more paddy yields by adopting the SRI method.
