Asian markets settle mixed on Friday

17 Nov 2023 Evaluate
Asian markets settled mixed on Friday as jump in US jobless claims boosted expectations that the US Federal Reserve might cut interest rates in early 2024. Japanese shares rose after BoJ Governor Kazuo Ueda said that the Japanese economy is recovering moderately, and BoJ will move carefully on raising interest rates. Chinese shares gained marginally due to easing of tensions between the United States and China. However, Hong Kong shares declined more than 2%. Shares in Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba tanked after the firm's surprise decision to spin off its cloud business because of the US-China chip war.
